Laser
WHAT IS A LASER?
A laser is a device that creates a dense, powerful beam of light. The beam from a low-power laser can play the music on a CD or read those weird bar codes on your box of corn flakes. High-power lasers can make precise cuts through thick steel or blow up a guided missile. It is the lower-power laser that is used by Dr.Bien
HOW THEY ARE USED:
Experimental dental lasers have been around since the 1960s, but have recently been approved for dental use.
It can cut and remove gum tissue. This procedure promotes faster healing, lowers risk of infection, reduces pain after treatment and is quiet. All you hear is the hissing of the air jet that cools the spot where the beam is focused.
Periodontal, or gum related care has greatly benefited from laser technology. Tartar in the mouth, if not taken care of can do damage to the gums. It promotes swelling and bleeding which causes the gums to weaken and eventually pull away from the teeth. When this happens, the empty spaces fill with bacteria. This condition results in gum disease. Dr. Bien can treat the disease with a laser by sending light energy into theses spaces. The laser light destroys the bacteria.
Before lasers, this was a very painful procedure that required considerable recovery time. Laser technology has significantly reduced the amount of pain and down-time associated with this procedure.
The laser is not only for gum disease, but can be used in cosmetic procedures. Dr. Bien can use laser energy to reshape the gums. Patients with short teeth hidden by gum tissue can have this procedure performed. The laser light shapes and contours the gums , pushing them down to expose more tooth enamel. By utilizing the laser in her practice Dr.Bien can ultimately make for healthier gums and a fantastic smile.
