IMPLANTS
A dental implant provides several advantages over other tooth replacement options. In addition to looking and functioning like a natural tooth, a dental implant replaces a tooth or group of teeth without sacrificing the health of neighboring teeth.

Because a dental implant will replace your tooth root, the bone is better preserved.  Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact.

In the long term, an implant can be more esthetic and easier to keep clean than a bridge. Gums can recede around a bridge, leaving a visible defect when the metal base or collar of the bridge becomes exposed. Resorbed bone beneath the bridge can lead to an unattractive smile. The cement holding the bridge in place can wash out, allowing bacteria to decay the teeth.

Symptoms include bleeding swollen gums , excessive plaque buildup and chronic bad breath.

Dr. Bien can treat the disease using the Perio Protect System.

The Perio Protect System uses an FDA cleared medical device that directs antimicrobial agents into the gingival sulcus More info  and helps maintain it at the source of the gum infection.

During a dental visit, an impression is made of a patient’s teeth from which two separate appliances are made. One for the top set and one for the bottom set of teeth.

A dentist-prescribed solution is placed into each appliance. The patient wears the appliances for a period of time prescribed by the dentist. More Info

More severe cases may require the use of our laser to treat the infection.

Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in which a person has episodes of blocked breathing during sleep.

An individual with obstructive sleep apnea usually snores soon after falling asleep. The snoring continues at a regular pace often becoming louder. The snoring is interrupted by a silent period during which there is no breathing. This is followed by a loud snort and gasp, then the snoring returns. This pattern repeats frequently throughout the night. Someone with this condition often is not aware of these episodes.

The common symptoms are:

  • Abnormal daytime sleepiness, including falling asleep at inappropriate times
  • Awakening unrefreshed in the morning

Also may include:

  • Depression
  • Memory difficulties
  • Morning headaches
  • Personality changes
  • Poor concentration
  • Restless and fitful sleep
  • Insomnia

The Cause

Normally, the muscles of the upper throat help keep the airway open.  Even though these muscles usually relax during sleep, the throat remains open enough to allow air flow.

However, some people have a narrower throat area. When the muscles in their throat relax during sleep, the airway may completely close. Loud snoring and labored breathing occur. During deep sleep, breathing can stop, often for more than 10 seconds. This is called apnea.

An episode is followed by a sudden attempt to breathe and a change to a lighter sleep stage. The result is a fragmented sleep pattern that is not restful.

Older obese men seem to be at higher risk, although many people with obstructive sleep apnea are not obese. The following factors may also increase your risk:

  • Certain shapes of the palate and jaw
  • Large tonsils and adenoids
  • Large neck or collar size
  • Large tongue
  • Narrow airway
  • Nasal obstruction

Alcohol or sedatives before sleep may increase the chances of having an episode.

Diagnosis

You will be given a physical exam. This will involve carefully checking your mouth and throat area. An x-ray may be used to confirm your oral health status. You will be asked a series of questions about daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, and bedtime habits.

A sleep study (polysomnogram) will be used to confirm obstructive sleep apnea. In most cases it can be done at home with the use of a portable monitor. Sometimes an overnight visit to a sleep clinic will be required.

The results will then be interpreted by a medical doctor specializing in sleep apnea.

Treatment

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines have been the first line of defense for the treatment of sleep apnea. In the past surgery was the only option available to avoid the CPAP mask.

That has changed with the use of better technology and materials to produce a comfortable and effective oral appliance.

Our office uses the Somnodent MAS (mandibular advancement splint) to treat mild, moderate and severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The MAS is worn while sleeping. It is comfortable and easy to use. The appliance moves the lower jaw slightly forward. This action tightens the muscles and tissue of the upper throat to prevent obstruction while sleeping.  MORE INFO
